Recommended Tours for Transit Passengers in Different Cities

Conditions for Application

1. A confirmed ticket and valid visa to a third country or region (if required) are needed for entry. Based on the latest information, the 72 hours starts from 00:00 the day following the entry date in almost all the airports, except Beijing Airport. For example, if an air passenger arrives in Guangzhou at 08:00 on June 2nd, then the latest time for him to leave is 23:59 on June 5. In this case, the actual stopover time is more than 72 hours. However, in Beijing, the 72 hours count from the scheduled arrival time of the flight. To play on the safe side, passengers are recommended to be more conservative and not to exceed the "strict 72 hours" which counts from the flights' scheduled arrival time to the departure time.

2. The flights can only stop in one Chinese city, meaning passengers have to enter and exit from the same city, except in cities where the 144-hour visa-free transit has been implemented. For instance, if a flight lands in Xi'an via Beijing, passengers are not able to enjoy the policy. In addition, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are regarded as a third region in terms of transit issues. If a flight passes USA – Beijing – Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan, passengers are able to enjoy.

3. Only use flights to transfer in China. Passengers using other vehicles (including using flight for single trip) are not eligible to enjoy the policy.

4. Passengers are required to leave from the same airport that they arrive, except in some of the cities with 144-hour visa-free transit scheme where they may enter or leave from land or sea ports.

Documents for Application

Passport valid for at least 3 months from the date of entry. Actually there are cases that some passengers are denied at the immigration counter because the remaining validity of their passport is not more than 6 months, so it's better to keep your passport valid for at least 6 months to play safe.
Visa for a third country or region (if applicable)
A full completed Arrival/Departure Card (including name, nationality, passport no., visa no. & issuance place, flight no., purpose of visit, date of birth, gender)
A confirmed ticket to a third country or region is needed.

Procedure

Inform the airlines when boarding – Fill an Arrival/Departure Card on the flight - Apply the 72-hour permit – Claim the luggage – Go through the custom - Leave airport

 Tips:
Visa Free Direction Board
Direction Boards for 72-hour Special Counter

1. It is necessary to inform the airline at check-in, so that they can declare your request to the airport custom before landing. Passengers transiting via Beijing Capital International Airport can apply for this free transit permit after arrival.

2. There is a special counter/lane for the 72-hour free transit at the immigration, so passengers can go there directly by following the signs. For example, the immigration channels 2 to 4 are for 72-hour TWOV passengers in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

3. After the request to enjoy the 72-hour China TWOV is approved, the officer will stamp a stay permit on your passport. The duration of stay is written on the passport. Remember to tell the officer that one wants to use the 72-hour free transit if he/she already has a valid visa for China.

4. After leaving the airport, remember to register at local police station within 24 hours of arrival if one wants to stay over 24 hours. Those who live with family or friends need to go to register in person at the police station with relatives or friends. Those who live in hotels do not need to go, because the hotels will do it for the guests.

5. If visitors are unable to depart on time due to unavoidable reasons, such as flight cancellation or treatment of sudden disease, they need to apply for a visa from Municipal Public Security Bureau (PSB). Otherwise, tourists cannot apply for an extension of stay.

Difference between 72-Hour Visa-Free Transit and 24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Direct Transit within 24 hours is available for any nationality passenger and it is applicable to any vehicle, while the 72-hour Free Transit is only possible for passengers from designated countries and requires to transit in the airport.

Other Services for Free Transit

There are service centers for transit passengers in the terminals, offering rest places with drinking water and reading materials if they do not want to leave the airport. For visa-free transit passengers, the airports also provide services for currency exchange, mobile phone rental, car rental, left luggage, as well as local souvenir shops. Tour buses are available from the terminals for the convenience of tourists.

 Note:
In case that 1) you can't provide any of the required documents listed above, 2) or your flight route does not qualify, 3) or you have the record of overstaying in a country or getting visa refusal before, your application for the 72-hour visa-free transit permit may be refused. For fear of troubles caused by such cases, please make sure that you are eligible or apply for a regular transit visa in advance.

Different flights
Hi! I bought a plane ticket from Bangkok, Thailand to Shanghai (9/february/2025) and another one from Shanghai to Busan, South Korea (13/february/2025) both are different purchases and different airlines. Can I apply for the 144 transit visa?

Francisca, your itinerary is definitely and undeniably eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai area and you do not need any kind of visa. Also, I encourage you to use correct terminology because this is not 144 transit visa, but 144 hour visa free transit, so there is no any visa of any kind.

Traveling on separate tickets and using unrelated airlines is definitely allowed. It is the itinerary that matters. Your itinerary is fine and you are good to go. Have a nice journey.

Kiyuk, it is 144 hour visa free transit in Guangzhou and not 72 hour visa free transit. In other words, you can stay for up to 6 days in the entire Guangdong province - visa free. So, your both itineraries are perfectly within the 144 hour visa free transit rules.

If you decide to take a train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, that is even better than taking a flight because it is cheaper and also more convenient on so short distance, you will have to buy your train ticket in advance, even before your departure from Canada and print it out. You will have that printout at hand, ready to be presented to relevant authorities as a proof your transit intention. Also, after your stay in Guangzhou and in general in Guangdong province, you will have to take exactly that train you have bought your ticket for. Please, do not plan to take a bus because that would involve several complicated details because it will be hard to find a through bus and a ticket that you could buy in advance. Taking a train is the way to go.

In the end, I am a bit worried about your itinerary because, as far as I know, there are no direct flights between Vancouver and Guangzhou. Consequently, you cannot fly on a nonstop flight from Vancouver to Guangzhou because a transit point is required. It is fine to have a transit point, but it has to be in a third country (for example in South Korea) and it cannot be anywhere in mainland China! The basic rule of 72/144 hour visa free transit clearly states that the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese stop (Guangzhou in your case), have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). In any case, I wish you a nice journey.

Your itinerary is definitely and undeniably eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai area. Macau is considered as eligible territory for this purpose in the same way as are sovereign countries. I am just a bit worried because there is no any single direct flight between Shanghai and Newark (EWR) airport, so you should be very careful that your flight Shanghai to Newark does not have a return flight back to Macau or similar.

Also, you should be aware that your flight from Macau to Shanghai has to be a nonstop one. In other words, you are not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China of any kind beside Shanghai. Have a nice journey.

72 Hour Visa Waiver for trip with Layovers
Hello, if we have flights from Osaka to Harbin with a 3 hour layover on both legs in Shanghai, would we qualify for the 72 hour visa waiver? We would not be leaving the airport in PVG.

Entry Itinerary: Osaka > Harbin (3 hour layover in PVG Shanghai)
Exit Itinerary: Harbin > Bangkok (3 hour layover in PVG Shanghai)

Thanks.

No, unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for 72 hour visa free transit in Harbin. Simply speaking, 72 hour visa free transit clearly requires that the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese stop have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). Also, it is not allowed to have two mainland Chinese stops in a row. You will have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance or adapt/alter your itinerary to be in accordance with 72 hour visa free transit rules. I'm sorry.

One night stop in Shanghai
Hello, we will be flying in from New Zealand on 8th March 2025 approx, 7.15 am at PVG. Our following flight will be on 9th March 2025 at 10.55am from PVG to London Heathrow. Are we ok for the 72 hour visa free transit?

If so how do we go about applying for the 72 hour visa free?

Thank you in advance

Actually, you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit because there is no 72 hour visa free transit in Shanghai for years. Basically, this is something that does not change anything regarding your stay because you have right to stay in wider Shanghai area absolutely visa free.

The first thing you will do upon landing in Shanghai is to approach transit counter where you will present your flight tickets and your hotel booking. After a short check, you will be granted a permit and then you will head to the immigration and finally to the city to enjoy your time on your own. Have a nice journey.

SOUTH AFRICAN LIVING IN HKG.
(permanent resident)

Need exit HKG on train to Shenzhen airport. Stay 2 hrs to board a flight home to SOUTH AFRICA.

Can I do this without a visa or at least Buy a visa on arrival on train boarder on route to airport?

My country is not on the list.

Bruce, you simply have to obtain a 5 day Shenzhen VOA at one of three designated border crossings and with opening hours from 09:00 to roughly 16:30. Simply speaking, there is no other way and there is no other option.

My suggestion is that you appear at Lo Wu / Luohu border crossing in the morning hours where you will apply for a visa. You will fill out the form, the photo of you will be taken and you will also present your flight ticket out of Shenzhen to a third country. The price of a visa is 130 CNY and it has to be paid by card. You will be, practically for certain, be granted a visa since your flight ticket is the best vaccine against any possible rejection.

One more suggestion, do not arrive later than 08:30 at the border crossing because otherwise you could lose your flight because on certain days the amount of applicants could surpass the number of applications that could be normally processed. Just invest some time in your peace of mind. Have a nice and successful journey.

By the way, you cannot use direct trains between Hong Kong West Kowloon train station and mainland China because this is not an eligible crossing since it does not have a visa office. The alternative of Lo Wu / Luohu could be to take the first morning ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port where you can also apply for a 5 days Shenzhen VOA. Visa office opening hours: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30.
