How to count the layover time of 144 hours?

It counts from 00:00 of the day following passengers' arrival. That is to say, the allowed time to stay is actually longer than 144 hours.

Eg: If one arrives at 6:00 am on July 1, the layover time counts from 00:00 of July 2 and the passenger should hold a ticket with the scheduled departure time before 23:59 of July 7. In this case, the allowed stay period is 162 hours in maximum.

What can I do during the 144 hours?

If you are flying just via Hong Kong and not via any other mainland Chinese airport, you can travel absolutely visa free because 144 hour visa free transit is not relevant for Hong Kong. Canadians can stay in Hong Kong for up to 90 days visa free, so there is no a single reason to be worried or to plan the schemes that are not relevant for this region. This scheme is relevant for mainland China only. Have a nice journey.

Yes, there is. When you land in Shanghai the first thing you will do is to look after 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets and your hotel booking confirmation. When you are granted a permit, you will head to the immigration. You will also hear that some travelers have obtained a permit right at the immigration, but the recommendation is that you look after the said counter to avoid any misunderstandings. Have a nice journey.

You can use 144 hour visa free transit, but just for one transit area. You will have to choose whether it will be Shanghai or Beijing. You cannot visit both Shanghai and Beijing. In other words, an eligible itinerary is:

Toronto - Shanghai - Hong Kong

but

Toronto - Shanghai - Beijing - Hong Kong

Is not eligible.

Simply speaking, you cannot have two mainland Chinese stops in a row of any kind.

15 Day Visa Free or 144 hour visa
HI, I will be travelling from UK > Guangzhou > New Zealand. I have booked a hotel in Guangzhou for 5 days. I want to visit Macau as a day trip. Will that be possible? Can I pick and choose the 15 day visa over the 144 hour visa as there are lesser restrictions. Is it possible to walk across the Zhuhai - Gongbei border to Macau and back to China on the 144 hour visa? I have a New Zealand passport. Your help is much appreciated.

Ken, you should just forget about 144 hour visa free transit because you as New Zealand citizen can enter and stay in China visa free for a period of up to 30 days (30 days visa free will replace 15 days visa free starting from November 30 of this year). You can do exactly everything you have planned based on the fact that you carry a passport that is under the Chinese visa waiver program. Also, you are allowed to make a visit to Macau in the way as you have planned. You should be totally relaxed because your visit to China will be very similar, in terms of formalities, as if you are visiting Thailand or some other visa free country. Enjoy in your journey.

144 hour visa free transit
I am living in Beijing. I am working here. My daughters (they are Chileans as do I) will be be in Spain and they want to travel to China for visit me, then we are going to Hong Kong and then they will go back to Spain and I will go back to Beijing. First question is: they are minors, so what documents they need to travel here for 144 visa free transit. Second question is: they are going to stay in my home in Beijing. Which document they need to provide in immigration desk about staying in Beijing?

Jorge, I can answer to the question regarding the eligibility of your daughters as far as 144 hour visa free transit is concerned. So, an itinerary:

Spain - Beijing - Hong Kong

Is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and your daughters do not need any kind of visa. It is important that they do not have any additional landing anywhere within mainland China within this particular itinerary. Your daughters will have to carry a proof of their flight from Beijing to Hong Kong.

Also, I can answer you to the question regarding their stay in your home in Beijing. Upon their arrival in Beijing they can stay at your home in Beijing, but you will take care to register them at the closest PSB (Public security bureau) within 24 hours after their arrival in China. It is recommended that you bring a person with you who speaks Chinese or if you speak Chinese, it will be you to accomplish this formality. Please, just do not forget to fulfill about this formality. Beside this registration, there are no other requirements.

As far as their travel as minors is concerned, I have to admit that this is a detail I am not able to answer you with certainty. I would say that you should ask an airline about this particular detail in the context of the transport of underage (minors) persons.
